Before coming to Rocklin, I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I spent 11 of those years serving as a Creative Director, Web Site Designer & Developer, for both agencies and on in-house creative teams. I also owned and managed the creative, design agency of PaigeWarner Communications, which had a team of 11 graphic & website designers and developers. I also did a stint for 6 years, where I moved to Phoenix, Arizona, started, and ran my current creative design studio of 480east, which has since been relocated back to Northern California.
I've provided creative and strategy for clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune Global 500 companies including Frito-Lay, Lucent Technologies, Pacific Bell, PETsMART, Phoenix Birthing Project & Ryland Homes.
I have expert level skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Quark Xpress, Wordpress, Blogs, CMS - MODx, HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, JQuery and Prototype Javascript libraries, XML, XSL, Java, JSP, Servlets, Perl, and AJAX
Web Servers: Apache Http Server, Apache Tomcat, IIS
Databases: MySQL, MSSQL, Access
I've built everything from static brochure type sites to large dynamic sites based on a CMS - Content Management System. I have experience with ecommerce sites and other secure payment based websites.
My philosphy is to build clean standard, compliant, cross browser compatible HTML/CSS websites, while keeping SEO (search engine optimization) in mind. Google (and others) will find the information they are looking for, fast and easy without using any methods they consider devious that could end up with your site being penalized and/or blacklisted.
The technology is pretty much to the point where if you can imagine it, I can build it.
I work in accordance with the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Web Standards. I do this by writing code that validates. Writing semantic and well structured code makes our websites usable and accessible for people of all abilities.
Identity and Brand — Logos, identity design and brand. Two peas and their pod. The foundation of most solid design is brand. Define the brand and you're almost there. Stay true to that brand and you're home free. I'm comfortable defining and designing complete identity systems as well as working within existing brand specs.
Collateral Design — Advertising, business cards, stationery, media kits, brochures, posters, flyers, newsletters...they all support marketing and sales efforts. Thoughtful design and execution can be the difference between successful marketing and a money pit.
Package Design — From an eye-catching label on this year's Pinot Noir to CD and DVD cases. Packaging is the front line on the retail sales front. I'm fascinated with good package and label design and find it especially rewarding when a piece comes out well.
Website Design, Interaction Design, Interface Design — From concept to code, I strive for clear, unpretentious design with usability always in mind and advocate standards-oriented HTML markup and CSS. Interaction design isn't just relegated to the web browser anymore. Email marketing is still a channel of communication that's not used effectively by most companies, web communities provide tremendous opportunity for your message to move itself, and consumers are increasingly connected via mobile devices.
Website Development — Beyond HTML and CSS scripting, I'm certainly not as speedy at bottom-up application development as developers that live in code all day every day. But, my development background makes me a very capable integrator and able to understand and communicate well with development teams
Outside the studio, I spend my time obsessing about good design, cooking, playing music, clinging to youth by playing in a band, and exploring Northern California with my lovely wife and son. Oh, I also help coach my son's little league team, year round.
I grew up in San Leandro, California to the son of a Mechanical Engineer, owned a Drafting company at the age of 17, was briefly a Stock Broker, and have played in bands from Jazz to Classic Rock since the age of 15. I'm an obnoxious foodie and have been accused of being a neat freak more than once. I owned Tobias Dress Slacks (Angel Flights - Disco Era) in the 70s, had an amazing mullet (once), and my first car was a mighty 1971 Volkswagon Squareback.
The infographic of a typical day for me...enjoy!
